Psychology of work with AI

AI and LLMs will equip all of us with Iron Man suits. It is the great equalizer of expert skills, a democratization that, we can all imagine, will push all human beings into a new era of evolution.

We’ve all had the internet, and it was amazing that people could research their own way into any topic. It took hours, even days, and it was impersonal, but it was a leap forward. Now all of that is available to us in seconds. We can have real-time, professional-grade conversations about plumbing or oncology.

We feel more empowered: we can run our own health investigations (up to a point) and better understand what’s happening. We also feel more disempowered, contemplating a universe in which our specialization becomes everybody else’s norm. How will this change us? I’m exploring these questions in a series of essays.

Writing

  1. Non-deterministic AI and the illusion of control

Some 20+ years ago I had my first big release, for a high-traffic news website. It went down so quickly that I'll never forget how shocked I was.

  2. The only road there ever was?

    Coping with the LLM Multiverse

  3. We're living in a new age of sense of agency

AI made us all managers: we lose some flow, but we gain more agency.

  4. Flow is broken

Agents break flow twice: the waiting, and the doubt about whose thought it is.

  5. Slop avoidance may be one of the next big challenges

Some slop is tolerable. Beyond that, people avoid it, and originality gains value.
